Renowned video conferencing and cloud communication company Zoom has announced the launch of its cloud-based phone solution, Zoom Phone, in India. This includes cloud based private branch exchange (PBX) services, featuring local phone numbers.

First Roll Out in Pune, Maharashtra

Zoom Phone is being first launched in Maharashtra telecom circle, based in Pune and will be eventually expanded to other cities such as Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi, covering all major technology hubs in India.

Key Features of Zoom Phone

Zoom Phone will let business replace their traditional PBX (private branch exchange) systems with this more modern, cloud-based communication solution. Users can make inbound and outbound calls via the public switched telephone network (PSTN), providing seamless connectivity, both internally and externally. With this, businesses will be able to converge all their communication needs on one platform, Zoom Workplace, an open communication platform provided by Zoom.

This service will have AI powered capabilities such as post-call summaries, voicemail prioritization, and task extraction. These advanced features are designed to enhance productivity and overall user experience.

Licensing and Regulatory Requirements

Zoom has obtained Unified License with Access — All/PAN India and Long Distance licenses from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in April 2023. This allowed Zoom to setup a dedicated domestic infrastructure within Indian telecom regulatory framework.

Global Expansion

This service is expanding globally the with service being contracted by five corporate customers with over 1,00,000 seats in the first quarter of 2025. This is a testimony to the fact that Zoom Phone and similar cloud based telecom services are catching up fast in the tech world.

Velchamy Sankarlingam, Zoom’s President of Product and Engineering is excited about the introduction of Zoom Phone in India. He said, “Zoom’s cloud PBX service meets the requirements of India’s Unified Telecom license, which requires building the dedicated local interconnection infrastructure in accordance with regulatory requirements. This demonstrates Zoom’s commitment to bringing a trusted service that our customers want.”

Krishna Baidya, Senior Industry Director at Frost & Sullivan, feels the launch of Zoom Phone comes at a time when the demand for Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) solutions is rising in India. Zoom will benefit by offering telephony integrated with advanced communication tools at the workplace. This could prove game-changer, not only for Zoom but also for businesses using this technology.
